Operational risk is inherent in all bank products, services and activities, and the effective management of operational risk is a fundamental element of effective enterprise risk management. The Operational Risk Oversight (ORO) department within Operational Risk Management (ORM) is hiring a Senior Risk Officer to help strengthen the foundation of operational risk management by verifying the first line of defense properly mitigates risk and is operating as intended. This role sits in the second line of defense and independently identifies and assesses operational risks and reports the results to leadership, management committees and the Board.




Responsibilities include monitoring the quality of risk management activities, influencing and challenging material risk decisions and ensuring alignment with the Company’s risk appetite as it relates to Enterprise Loan Operations (ELO) – Commercial Lending, within the first line of defense.


Specific responsibilities include the following:


  • Work closely with key stakeholders to ensure alignment with the Bank’s risk appetite.
  • Review and validate first line of defense governance documents, policies/procedures and reporting.
  • Provide support and guidance in the development and implementation of controls, key risk indicators, reporting, and other aspects of a strong control environment.
  • Perform issue/observation analysis related to regulatory, audit, and self-identified issues.
  • Review significant Operational Risk Events and associated Post Event Reviews, as needed.
  • Perform targeted reviews to ensure risks are appropriately identified and mitigated.
  • Perform quarterly control validation activities to ensure all key controls are identified, challenged, and tested appropriately.
  • Perform quarterly risk assessments to develop an independent opinion and evaluation of the effectiveness of risk management activities and the control environment.
  • Publish quarterly opinion memos to communicate effectiveness of risk management and control activities and report on deficiencies and related mitigation activities.
  • Create and publish risk reports to senior and executive management.
  • Evaluate alignment with the Bank’s Risk Management Framework, and other governance documents, programs, and standards.
  • Develop and implement applicable risk training, as needed.


Job Qualifications:


  • Requires a bachelor’s degree  
  • 8+ years of risk management, business, finance, analysis, auditing or other directly related experience.
  • Working knowledge of risk management techniques and practices, and/or risk and control assessment techniques and concepts, and/or auditing or testing practices.
  • Working knowledge of commercial lending operations and/or front office practices required.
  • Strong interpersonal, critical thinking, problem resolution and analytical skills required.
  • Ability to work on unusually complex problems and provide solutions that are highly creative.
  • Comfortable driving initiatives forward that may have limited information and/or direction.
  • Must have excellent presentation and communication skills, both verbally and written.
  • Ability to effectively build relationships, work on cross departmental teams and engage with senior management.
  • Experience working with banking applications, processes and procedures is preferred.
  • A combination of education and experience may meet qualifications.
